Making a cheap photography spotlight (RM40 = $12)

Since I join stock photography I always wanted to snap photos with isolated white backgrounds. I tried to mock up white backgrounds with white plain paper but it was not good enough.

Until one day when I was window shopping in a supermarket, I noticed that they are using simple small spotlight to highlight some items. From there I was observing on some of simple lighting at the office and shopping complexes.

Until one day I went to a lighting shop and asked for a simple home spotlight. I thought the price could be up to RM50-RM100 ringgit ($15-$30), but then actually a simple reflector just cost me RM10 ($3). In addition to that, you probable need wires and a plug which cost you another RM10 ($3). You could save more if you can salvage the wires from your house. Finally, to complete the set, an energy saving white color bulb which cost me RM20 ($6) for the 23W, the brightest in the energy saving bulbs family.

On the left is a sample of object as shown above as a result of this cheap spot light. Because the output power is not as strong as studio spotlight, you might want to overexpose your object to make sure the white background looks bright enough.

I believe that all hobbyist photographers would have at least a camera tripod. I've tried to mount this 'spotlight' onto my tripod and guess what? It works. So with this $12 spotlight with the tripod, you could operate mini photography studio.

Below is the sample image when the object was on the floor and the 'spotlight' was mounted on the tripod. Samples here are all without post processing (PP).

All the best!
